Sierra Leone University Strike Continues as Academic Staff Demand Written Commitments By George Philip Jambawai FREETOWN, Sierra Leone — October 14, 2026 The industrial action by academic staff at Sierra Leone’s public tertiary institutions remains unresolved, as university lecturers maintain their demands for a 100 per cent salary increase and approval of revised Conditions of Service, despite government appeals for them to return to work. In separate statements issued on October 12 and 13, the Academic Staff Association of Njala University (ASA-NU) and the Academic Staff Association of the University of Sierra Leone (ASA-USL) reaffirmed their support for the strike, insisting that any decision to suspend it must follow meaningful progress in negotiations. The dispute escalated on September 16, following the expiration of a 21-day strike notice. The Union of Academic Staff Associations (UASA), the umbrella body representing academic staff associations, has maintained tha...

APC’S UNITY DRIVE IN PUJEHUN: SIDIE YAHYA TUNIS TAKES THE MESSAGE TO THE GRASSROOTS By George Philip Jambawai As the All People’s Congress (APC) looks toward the 2028 general elections, the challenge is not only to win votes but also to rebuild trust, address internal grievances, and close ranks within its political house. In Pujehun District, Sidie Yahya Tunis, a senior APC  member and native of the district, is taking that message to the grassroots, calling for reconciliation and supporting party structures. But can a renewed spirit of togetherness translate into electoral gains? His October 8 visit brought him to Zimmi, Potoru and Pujehun Town, where APC and Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) supporters came together to welcome him, putting political differences aside in a show of local solidarity. Against the backdrop of the APC’s efforts to strengthen its grassroots structures following lower-level elections, Tunis urged members to ease tensions, restore trust...

Musa Tarawally Membership Dispute Deepens as CDP Leaders Give Conflicting Accounts By George Philip Jambawai BO CITY, SIERRA LEONE -October 3, 2026 A political question that has lingered since the 2018 elections has returned to the spotlight, but this time the disagreement is unfolding from within the Citizens Democratic Party (CDP) itself.   At the centre is former CDP presidential candidate Alhaji Musa Tarawally and a question that appears simple but carries significant political weight: Did he formally leave the CDP in 2018, or does he remain a member of the party? The issue resurfaced at a CDP National Executive Council meeting in Bo City on Saturday, October 3, as the party discussed internal restructuring. The controversy began publicly in September after the CDP National Secretary General, Ibrahim Sorie Sesay, wrote to the Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), stating that Tarawally remained a CDP member. The letter, dated September 3, reportedly said there wa...

The training brought together representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Njala University, the University of Makeni, the Sierra Leone Agricultural Research Institute (SLARI), local authorities and other implementing partners. Although the discussions took place away from farms and livestock pens, their impact could eventually be felt in rural households.   LLDP is not simply about increasing the number of livestock in Sierra Leone. The project aims to improve livestock productivity and animal health, promote sustainable production and create better opportunities for rura...

ASA STRIKE ENTERS FOURTH DAY AS GOVERNMENT AND ACADEMIC STAFF CONTINUE ENGAGEMENT By George Philip Jambawai The industrial action by academic staff in Sierra Leone's public tertiary institutions has entered its fourth day, leaving academic activities disrupted as the government and the Union of Academic Staff Associations (UASA) continue efforts to resolve a dispute over salaries and conditions of service. The strike began at midnight on Wednesday, September 16, after the expiration of a 21-day notice issued by UASA to the Government on August 13. Since then, academic staff have withdrawn their services across public tertiary institutions, bringing lectures and other academic activities to a halt and leaving many students uncertain about when normal activities will resume. At Njala University, the effect of the industrial action has been visible in the reduced movement of students and the interruption of normal academic activities. For students who had expected to con...

ASA Strike Disrupts Postgraduate Examinations at Njala University By George Philip Jambawai Bo City, Sierra Leone Academic activities at Njala University have been disrupted after the Academic Staff Association (ASA) began industrial action on 16 September, reportedly bringing postgraduate examinations to an abrupt halt. The strike began at midnight after the association’s 21-day strike notice expired, during which ASA had engaged university authorities and the government over demands relating to salaries, harmonisation, and staff welfare.  At the university’s examination hall on the morning following the commencement of the strike, postgraduate students who had arrived expecting to sit their scheduled examinations were instead met with closed doors and an empty venue. The disruption has left students, particularly those enrolled in postgraduate programmes, uncertain about when examinations will resume. Speaking on the strike, the President of the Academic Staff Associati...
